... And then the end will come? by Fern Holm, author of PIVOT POINT -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” Mark 16:15. Some say the Great Commission will soon be fulfilled. If so, this could be the generation which will witness the return of Christ. “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and THEN the END will come” Matthew 24:14. We all know what glorious event immediately follows: Jesus will return to reign, as the thousand-year Ruler of the kings of earth, in preparation for the final death of evil and the resurrection of a new heavens and a new earth on which God Himself can again dwell among men - as He did in the Garden long ago. But here's a rather scary question: What if our Christian gospel IS preached in all the world, but the end DOESN'T come and - therefore - Christ can not yet return? If we take this scriptural sequence of events to heart, this could be the case - every single person is reached, yet nothing happens. Why do I even bring up such a possibility? If you look carefully to pinpoint exactly what Jesus was sent to preach, and then see how He sent out His disciples to do the same, I think you will discover a crucial element may actually be MISSING from the typical Christian gospel as it is preached today. I absolutely believe the widely-accepted message of salvation through Christ is right and true, but at the same time, I fear that it is fatally incomplete. If you are willing to see it, there is a correlation between the gospel of the kingdom of God, which Jesus said would be preached in all the world and then the end will come - and the EVERLASTING gospel preached by an ANGEL just before "the end" DOES come - Babylon falls! As I understand it, we have largely failed to include the "everlasting gospel" of Revelation 14, the one that has always been so: the gospel of the KING-dom of God (the Father). The disciples, after Jesus' resurrection and ascension, presented BOTH elements of a complete gospel to the unsaved: "preaching the kingdom of God AND teaching the things which concern the Lord Jesus Christ" Acts 28:31. Should we be doing anything less? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
